The town’s original name was Table Top Mountain, a literal description of the area’s landscape. However, the name was shortened to Rye, supposedly after a complaint by the Post Office about the name being too long.

Later the town gained popularity and importance as the Arkansas River Colorado greenback cutthroat trout, a species thought to be extinct, was found in a small creek flowing near the town. The species is now a specialty of Colorado Rivers and is also the State’s official fish. 

Lake Isabel and Beckwith Reservoir also provide plenty of fishing spots. You can also enjoy boating, kayaking, and swimming in either of these water bodies. In fact, many anglers make their way to the small picturesque town to catch the official state fish and other fishes, bringing a steady flow of visitors to the town, giving a boom to the lodging/accommodation industry. 

The nearby forest is also another tourist attraction site. Many adventure seekers and nature lovers make their way to the town to traverse one of the many hiking and biking trails extending into the forest.
